December 15, 2017 at MGIMO University by invitation of the MGIMO Chinese Students’ Club a lecture on “Greater Eurasia: the concept, sides, challenges and prospects” took place. The lecture was held by Yuri Kofner, head, Eurasian sector, CCEIS, HSE; research assistant, IIASA (Vienna).
The participants of the lecture were students of Moscow universities, employees of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, the Russian Export Center.
At the beginning, the lecturer presented the Eurasian sector of the Centre for Complex European and International of Higher School of Economics, talked about its activities and invited the young researchers and government officials to cooperate with the new research organization.
Within the lecture, the expert gave a detailed definition of the terms “Greater Eurasia” and “Greater Eurasian Partnership” in its geographic and geopolitical dimensions, listed the formats of international cooperation of the EAEU, told about the progress of negotiations on free trade areas between the Eurasian Economic Union and third parties (by December 2017 over 50 countries indicated their willingnes to cooperate with the EAEU), spoke about the interests, conditions, challenges and opportunities of a potential EU – EAEU common economic space, separated reality from myth about the Chinese “One Belt – One Road” initiative, listed the main elements of the planned EAEU – China agreement on nonpreferential trade and economic cooperation.
Concluding the lecture, Yuri Kofner answered questions from the audience and shared his thoughts on various economic, military, political and cultural aspects of the “Greater Eurasia” concept.
