_ Comment by Jurij Kofner, director of the Center for Eurasian Studies to the newspaper “Soyuznoe Veche” given during ithe EEC – RIAC young leaders school “Iternational cooperation of the EAEU” in the Embassy of Belarus in Moscow . May 16, 2017. Interview by Nikolai Alekseev.
I live and work in the capital of Russia, but I am often in Germany and Austria. I see that the population both in Europe and in Eurasia knows very little about the Eurasian Economic Union. From sporadic news articles the people learn that there has been either this or that meeting between Putin, Nazarbayev, Lukashenka and so on. But what does that mean for the ordinary worker? The is no clear understanding. Especially, there is little or almost any youth engagement in the Eurasian project. And we do not have enough expert discussions on this subject. Such as the EEC – RIAC Eurasian young leaders school, are really needed, so that through this kind of events we can broadcast such questions as: why and what are the EEC clercs doing?
I believe, that the European and Eurasian unions will actively cooperate in the future. At the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria the possibility of such an enhanced economic cooperation is studied on a scientific level. This project is conducted in cooperation with EEC, the Eurasian Development Bank and with the participation of the European Commission. But even in this institute they admit that the “integration of integrations” will not happen before 2025. In order to achieve this, first and foremost, we need the political willingness of Brussels. The economic benefits have long been proven, and business from both sides supports the “Lisbon to Vladivostok” concept wholeheartedly.
